A heavyweight night of Soul sounds at Mississippi Studios as a unique set of Northwest dance bands get together with Larry Yes, Portland’s psych/folk/love master, to burn down the house together! A summer dance party to remember. Let the good times soul…dance…party!

Larry Yes
Larry Yes is one of my best friends and an inspiring musician and human being all around.  His music breaks down many barriers while comfortably nesting on indie folk, rock, and psychedelic tones throughout his musical excursions.  Larry simultaneously takes you way out in to the stratosphere, while at the same time grounds you with words you need to hear.  His music is playful medicine that has helped me through difficult times in life.  We use some Yes lyrics in the bridge of the YBB song Sri Racha.

There’s an innocence, a fluidity to Larry Yes‘ quivering vocals. He seems to occupy the same off-kilter realm of Raccoon-era Michael Hurley (not in sound but in spirit) and employs subtle texturing and psychedelic flourishes to surprising effect. His lyrics are hopeful and childlike, yet weighted with the existential melancholy of a grown man lost in an overwhelming world (naturalismo.wordpress.com)
Larry Yes has been making music in Portland since long before the city was known as a hip place for musicians to stop and smell the roses. Yes got his start at the legendarily infamous and sadly defunct X-Ray Café, which brought the Rose City’s finest underground musicians through its doors from 1990 to 1994. The X-Ray, once located at 214 W. Burnside St., played a major role in helping to shape and form Portland’s underground music culture

Tezeta Band
Tezeta Band is the sound of memory, of nostalgia, of sweaty soulful dance music, part jazz, part motown, part Ethiopian folk music and inspired by and arranged from the Golden Age of Ethiopian music, the late 1960's and early 1970's. Imagine James Brown, Elvis Presley, and John Coltrane merged into one sound, one source, melting together in the clubs and lounges of Ethiopia.
The inspiration for the Tezeta Band is the Golden Age of Ethiopian Dance Music that produced legendary Ethiopian musicians such as Tilahoun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed, Seyoum Gebreyes, Aleymeyehu Eshete, and Mulatu Astatke. These artists blended revolutionary sounds and ideas into a powerful Ethiopian soul sound. In their music you hear the inspiration and influence of American funk, jazz, and rock & roll interpreted and reborn in a new and beautiful, truly Ethiopian voice. Tezeta Band is again interpreting and reinventing this music of our shared airwaves and shared love from Africa to America to Africa and back to America again.

Since 2008, Tezeta Band has brought their high energy seven pieceEthio-Soul revue to clubs across the Northwest. In addition to their performances at The Woods, Doug Fir and others. Tezeta Band's greatest moment came on New Year's 2010 when they were able to perform with living legend, Mahmoud Ahmed in Portland, Oregon.
